Abstract
This study revisits the literary tradition of adventure and travel in order to identify the traces that shape the imaginary of sea creatures located in the South Pole. This long-standing system of beliefs reaches its culmination in the configuration of the monster, which allegorically materializes the fear of the unknown. This discourse reflects on horror and on the symbolic forms embodied by the ineffable sea monster and its pursuit. It further examines the reinterpretations of this myth, which operates as a mechanism for the destabilization of reality even in contemporary literature, where the aesthetic is grounded in the threat of an inexplicable creature.
