Abstract

This work is part of a larger research project on the challenges of adapting Latin American texts—considered to be works of fantasy or so-called magical realism—for film and television. In the case of Gabriel García Márquez, both his own film work and the adaptations of his narrative texts (most of which were unsuccessful) are varied and numerous. In this case, I am focusing exclusively on the short story “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” and its film adaptation by Fernando Birri, both to narrow the scope of my work and because it is one of the adaptations that best illustrates the difficulty of translating magical or fantasy literature to the screen.
