Abstract

In June 2007, the Sixth International Colloquium on Fantasy Literature: The Fantastic: North and South was held in Gothenburg, Sweden, attended by nearly 70 researchers from 18 countries and 50 institutions in the Americas and Europe. This fact alone could serve as evidence demonstrating how fantasy literature, once considered a “minor” genre by serious critics, has been gaining ground and importance in scholarly discourse and has become a powerful force. Even if it is unable to draw specialists to the colloquium, this forum for academic discussion is where we have sought to cultivate a meaningful space to exchange ideas, discover and share opinions, explore the literature, and make friends who share a passion for this rich field of study that is the fantastic.
