Sieges on the Devil’s Advocations in Regional Literatures from the Perspective of Transcultural Literary Criticism

Abstract

This paper traces the figure of the devil in authors from Colima in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, particularly in western Mexico (understood as a region that adds local identities to the representation of the Evil One), and contrasts these with those that appear in sym-bol dictionaries, the Bible and other sources. Through transcultural literary criticism, the study explores the ways in which these stories are renewed and remain relevant over time and attributes in which this character of world literature appears, from a specific temporal and spatial context within the country. It also considers the contribu-tion of local authors to an entity that remains firmly rooted in both the regional and global collective imagination, often through popular narratives that serve as symbolic repositories of critique and creation.
